After hours under the African sun, even the king of the savannah must pause. As this magnificent male lion lowered his head to drink, the water became perfectly still, reflecting every movement while the last warm light of the day illuminated his mane and amber eye.
Captured on a Sony A7R VI paired with the Sony FE 100–400mm f/4.5–5.6 GM, the long focal length allowed an intimate portrait without disturbing the animal’s natural behaviour. Shooting from a vehicle at eye level with the water, the challenge was waiting for the precise instant when the lion’s tongue broke the surface, creating gentle ripples while preserving the clean reflection below. Every sip lasted only a fraction of a second, demanding perfect timing and continuous autofocus.
