What began as a solemn farewell to a revered monk in Mae Kampong village, Thailand, quickly became something none of us expected. During the ปอยล้อ (Poi Lor) funeral ritual, the ceremonial fires suddenly intensified, sending flames and smoke racing through the gathering. While many instinctively stepped back, a small group of monks remained exactly where they were—calm, composed, and continuing to chant the Abhidhamma as if nothing around them had changed.
Captured in 2018 on a Sony RX10 IV, this image was made in an environment that was constantly shifting. Thick smoke rolled unpredictably through the scene, flames flared without warning, and visibility changed from one second to the next. Rather than chasing the chaos, the challenge was to wait for a brief opening in the smoke where the monk emerged naturally from the haze, framed by the fires that had moments earlier threatened to overwhelm the ceremony.
